Bootcamp Reflection

I spent 6 service hours at Lindon Elementary.
I learned that the student's tech skills were much higher than expected, even though most of the time they were playing games on line. I feel that this was because of the lack of discipline on the teacher’s part. I also feel that some of the information that the teacher was going over was a little too difficult for some of the student which was not in their zone of proximal development. I learned that I am incompetent with many tech programs and that I have a lot to learn about programming websites. I do feel that if I was taught how to program a website than I would have been able to help and assist the student's more, but I mostly felt useless. One of the goals that I will work on in the summer is to familiarize myself with the programming a website. I will do this by researching and if there are any workshops that teach how to program a website I could attend them to learn more. Another goal that I have is to become more confident in the programs that I have learned especially with using iMovie. I have been able to create a podcast and a digital story but my confidence in my abilities is not as high as I would like it to be able to teach my future students. To increase my confidence throughout the summer I will simply create more podcasts and or digital stories to become more familiar and successful with the program.

Internet Safety Reflection

The role in teaching Internet Safety and Cyber Ethics is very important as a future educator. I will be assigning students projects and assignment that would require student to work on the computer which gives me the obligation to teach them about internet and cyber safety. I feel that teachers do not stress the seriousness to the students. I say this because I was not informed of the issues when I was in Junior High or High school. When students are uninformed they are in danger of Pornography, Identity theft, Cyber Bullying and more. I don’t want to be the reason why students are not using the technology appropriately.
I would integrate ways to address these issues within my curriculum as an introduction to a project that requires computer use. I would assign student into groups to cover specific issues about internet safety and cyber ethics. I would have them create a group presentation to inform themselves and also their class members. I do this because they have to research the information and because students listen much better when their peers are teaching then when their actual teachers teach. I could also have groups create a poster or a flier about their specific subject and post them around the school, informing the entire student body. I could have them create brochures for their classmates to take home and talk to their family informing their parents to be aware of the issue.
